While objective feedback is welcome, it's perhaps worth mentioning that
human nature being what it is, when confronted with radical departures
from existing orthodoxies, scientists
tend to initially respond negatively. Darwin
himself anticipated this response. In
The Origin of Species, he wrote, “I by no
means expect
to convince experienced naturalists whose minds are stocked
with a
multitude of
facts all viewed, during a long course of years, from a point of view
directly
opposite to mine.”
This
response
is
perhaps even more likely
today because the continuing assaults on evolutionary biology by
creationist
zealots have rendered many biologists (particularly in the US,)
defensive and
unwilling to consider revisions to NeoDarwinian theory. It will not
be
easy for
scientists who have subscribed to a 'single evolution’ paradigm all
their
working lives and who have defended it against the tirades of religious
fundamentalists to impartially assess teem theory. I don’t know
what the solution is, except
to hope, as Darwin did, for “young and rising naturalists who will be
able to
view both sides of the question with impartiality.”
